HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot Cannot Miss the Darkest Storyline from the Books That Humanized Voldemort

While the Harry Potter movies have been a cult classic franchise and an element of nostalgia for fans, there’s no denying that Potterheads are somewhat sore from the fact that the movies scrapped a few of the essential aspects from the novels. But thankfully, now that HBO is planning on a TV reboot of J.K. Rowling’s magical story, there seems to be hope for salvation.

Potterheads seem to be armed with a list of important plots that were previously left out of the movies. One among them is the origin story of Lord Voldemort, which not only explains the tragedy of the Gaunt family but also rationalizes the cause behind the Dark Lord’s sociopathy. Therefore, based on fans’ eagerness for this plot, HBO should vehemently include it in the potential TV series.

Lord Voldemort’s Origin was Scrapped from the Original Films

When the Harry Potter films were released during the early 2000s, audiences were greeted with a magical depiction of J.K. Rowling‘s beloved books. Thereafter, given the popularity of the novels, the films turned into a major success. However, through the course, the movies did make a few sacrifices in terms of plotlines and character portrayals.

While some characters and storylines were curtailed, others were just erased from existence. And among all, one of the most notable omissions was the tragic history of Voldemort’s ancestry—the Gaunts. While in the books we found out how the family tree of Voldemort was steeped in darkness, poverty, and madness, the films surprisingly steered away from this backstory.

Unlike the books that explained the background of the terrorizing Dark Lord, and shed light on his maternal lineage and his paternal cruelty, the films skipped the whole history, thus failing to justify the factors that made Voldemort a power-hungry sociopath. This important piece of the puzzle that could explain Voldemort’s motivations and humanize his character was left behind in the movie.

HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot Must Include the Dark Lord’s Storyline

Therefore, now that HBO is once again planning to bring J.K. Rowling’s magical tale about the young wizard to life, millions of fans are hoping for the television reboot to salvage the Dark Lord’s backstory. Potterheads are hoping for the potential show to explore the darkest and most humanizing aspects of Voldemort’s story and throw some light on the larger narrative about the nature of evil, choices, and destiny.

Fans want the HBO reboot to delve into Voldemort’s maternal ancestors, the Gaunts (who were direct descendants of Salazar Slytherin), and discuss their twisted heritage, abusive household, and history of insanity. Focusing on his mother Merope Gaunt—who fell in love with a wealthy Muggle, Tom Riddle, and used Amortentia to make him fall in love with her—Potterheads hope for the show to explore her tragic and heartbreaking fate.

Showcasing how Merope Gaunt was disowned by her family and abandoned during her pregnancy by Tom Riddle, which led her to give birth to her son (who later became Voldemort) in an orphanage, fans hope for the show to justify how this emotional neglect and abandonment shaped Tom Marvolo Riddle’s early years. Thereafter, as Voldemort grew in the absence of mother’s love and father’s care—it became the origin of his sociopathy.

Now that HBO’s Harry Potter reboot is on the horizon, the opportunity to delve deeper into these untold aspects of Voldemort’s story is greater than ever. Further, considering how the medium is set to be a television series, the episodes could easily flesh out the hauntingly tragic Gaunt family history and explain how the neglect and isolation since birth affected the Dark Lord’s psyche and turned him into a ruthless villain.

Harry Potter films are currently available to watch on Max.
