A pensioner has died in a Cork house fire.

The blaze was detected shortly after 10.30am on Wednesday at a property at Grange Cottages in the Grange-Douglas area of Cork city.

Neighbours and family members raised the alarm amid concerns for the welfare of a man in his 70s who lived at the property.

Cork City Fire Brigade units attended the scene and personnel equipped with breathing apparatus were able to locate the man in a downstairs room.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood a blaze had occurred in one room of the property but had burned itself out.

The fire is believed to have occurred several hours before the alarm was raised and had not spread to other parts of the house.

Gardaí and Cork Fire Brigade officials are now investigating the precise cause of the blaze.

However, it is believed the fire was accidental.

The Office of the State Pathologist was notified and a full post mortem examination will be conducted at Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Garda are investigating possible causes of the fire.

A Garda spokesperson said: Gardaí and fire services responded to reports of a fire at a residence in Douglas, Cork at approximately 10.40am this morning, Wednesday, 2nd October 2024″.

“A man, aged in his 70s, was fatally injured during the incident. His body was later removed to the morgue at Cork University Hospital”

“The scene was preserved and a technical examination later took place”.
