‘I had to pull the plug and said I’d f*** off’ – The three cruciate injuries that forced Laois’ Mark Kavanagh to quit at 27

He should be front and centre in Sunday’s Laois SHC final, but former county star Mark Kavanagh was “dealt a different hand” and is determined to make the best of it.

Kavanagh was one of the most exciting talents in the country with wrists that could make the ball talk, but his knees gave away long before he was forced to hang up the hurl at the age of just 27. The first of his three cruciate knee ligament ruptures came in 2016 through a freak accident where an opposition player fell on him and his “MRI report read like a novel”.
