Over the past decade or so, the NBA All-Star Game has gone from an entertaining showcase of the league’s best talent to an absolute joke that almost no one wants to watch due to the lack of effort from the players.
With the All-Star Game becoming something that even diehard NBA fans avoid, commissioner Adam Silver knew that drastic changes needed to be made to the annual event.
As a result, the league has decided to go with a different format this year, but it remains to be seen whether it will work and if players take the change seriously enough to play with some effort.
ESPN pundit Stephen A. Smith recently felt compelled to blast NBA players for forcing the league into this situation.
“This is on the players, man,” Smith said on “First Take.” “And I’ve said this on a thousand occasions, and I’ll say it again, this is the ultimate indictment against the NBA players. They play harder practicing in the Summer League.”

Only time will tell whether these changes will result in a better product and a more entertaining competition, which is the ultimate goal in order to get fans re-engaged and looking forward to the showcase.
It’s safe to say the damage has already been done, as NBA players find it difficult to justify playing competitively during All-Star Weekend, but maybe that could change.
