Wexford councillor slams SPHE teaching on masturbation

Aontú councillor Jim Codd is a religion teacher at Bridgetown Vocational College and believes rather than teach children about masturbation the Government should be cracking down on tech companies and young people’s access to pornography

A Junior Cert schoolbook which advises teenagers to talk to their parents about the “myths and truths” of masturbation has been described as “woke-ism running wild” by Aontú councillor Jim Codd. The Rosslare councillor, who is a religion and special needs teacher at Bridgetown College in south Wexford, said “numerous young people” have expressed their unease to him about the social, personal and health education (SPHE) curriculum and said he has received a deluge of phone calls from parents “shocked” by some of the contents in new materials.

This follows on from an interview conducted with former SPHE teacher Mary Creedon last week, in which she spoke to The Natural Women’s Council about the graphic nature of some of the curriculum – including animated videos of simulated masturbation – being taught to teachers in Dublin City University, and said it would lead to “very upset, very anxious, and very distressed” children.
