Four men arrested after cannabis worth €8.5m found at business in Tallaght

Cannabis seized in Ballymount

Four men have been arrested after gardaí seized €8.5 million worth of cannabis in Dublin yesterday afternoon.

Shortly after 3pm, gardaí stopped two vehicles and carried out a planned search of a business premises in the Ballymount area of Tallaght.

In the course of the operation which was “targeting organised crime activity”, a total of 429 kilos of cannabis with an estimated street value of €8.5 million was seized.

A garda spokesman said the searches were a joint operation conducted by officers attached to the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and the Tallaght Drug Unit supported by the Revenue Customs Service.

He said: “Four males aged 31, 45, 52 and 58 were arrested under Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2006 for offences of facilitating and enhancing a criminal organisation to commit drug trafficking offences.

” All four are detained under the provisions of Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007 at Garda stations in the Dublin Region.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

Speaking about the huge haul, the head of Garda’s Organised and Serious Crime Bureau , Assistant Commissioner Justin Kelly said:

“This operation is another example of our commitment to target the enablers and facilitators of global drug trafficking networks and our ongoing efforts to make Ireland a difficult environment for them to operate in.”
