Leinster v Munster player ratings: Caelan Doris shines brightest in Croker showdown

Leinster v Munster player ratings: Caelan Doris shines brightest in Croker showdown

Leinster

Hugo Keenan – 7

Superb display from the Olympian, particuarly in attack where he popped up all over the place. Rock solid in defence and dealt with anything Munster threw at him.

Liam Turner – 6

Had some fine moments and takes a straight line in attack. Can be pleased with his display but could have done with more ball.

Garry Ringrose – 6

Strong in defence as usual but got little opportunity for forward-ball against a solid Munster unit, although a couple of neat passes created openings.

Jamie Osborne – 8

Great display, used his 6’4” frame to nail his tackles. Impressive going forward as well, showed great hands in the build-up to Hugo Keenan’s 15th minute try.

James Lowe – 7

Always a threat and as usual his positioning is spot on and Jamison Gibson-Park didn’t even need to look when setting him up for the opening try.

Ciarán Frawley – 7

The game-time continues at out-half and the performances keep improving. Will be disappointed with a couple of kicks but ran the game superbly.

Jamison Gibson-Park – 8

Another outstanding performance from a guy who just seems to get better. Superb, incisive passing, always takes the right option and was key to most of their scores.

Andrew Porter – 7

Was again pinged a few times in scrums, while also winning a few penalties. Very effective in the loose with his clearouts.

Lee Barron – 6

Decent opening half before giving way to young Gus McCarthy. Did the basics and will continue to build on these displays.

Tadhg Furlong – 7

Once more led the way with another barnstorming display but they didn’t have it all their own way in the Leinster front tow.

RG Snyman – 7

Big, big display from a guy who enjoyed little fortune when he was with Munster. Clearly enjoyed scoring the bonus point before the break on a night he crowned with nine crunching tackles.

James Ryan – 6

Couple of good lineout steals and busy around the park with a solid display where he executed all the basics well.

Jack Conan – 6

Was sharp at the breakdown but his evening only lasted 23 minutes before he had to go off and was replaced by Max Deegan who had a fine outing.

Josh van der Flier – 7

Brilliant on the floor and broke Munster’s hearts time and again with a typical display full of energy and was involved in most good things Leinster did.

Caelan Doris – 9

The new Leinster leader stepped up in his first clash with Munster as permanent skipper with 16 carries and 17 tackles as he ensured they bossed matters from the outset. Found a way to the line as well for a try beside the posts to crown an outstanding display

Replacements

Six internationals on the bench ensured Leinster held an edge in this department as well with Max Deegan making the most of his extended cameo.

Munster

Mike Haley – 8

Fine display from the Munster full-back which he crowned with his third try of the season. Did a lot to get them back in the game after their disastrous start.

Calvin Nash – 6

Through he was in for Munster’s opening try after 24 minutes but was whistled back for a forward pass from Alex Nankivell.

Tom Farrell – 8

Continues to impress since his summer move from Connacht. Started the move which led to their opening try and was strong with ball in hand.

Alex Nankivell – 6

Frustrating night which could have yielded so much more. Tried hard throughout but needed a few breaks to go his way.

Seán O’Brien – 7

Took his try well and kept looking for work, often coming in off his wing when Munster struggled to get the ball wide.

Jack Crowley – 6

Had to live off scraps as Leinster pounded forward. Missed an easy conversion but his side moving despite the big attention from the Leinster back row.

Craig Casey – 7

Good display from the scrum-half who found himself facing RG Snyman on the try-line before the break. Only one outcome but that hardly took from a solid performance.

Jeremy Loughman – 7

In the wars from the outset before eventually going off with a badly cut jaw and bruised eye. New took a back foot.

Niall Scannell – 7

Had to go off for an early HIA before returning to battle. Got through all the basics and was effective in the loose in a hard-working performance.

Stephen Archer – 7

Won penalties against Andrew Porter after being pinged against the Leinster loosehead. Some display from the 36-year record appearance holder.

Jean Kleyn – 6

Won a good lineout at the tail for the opening try but was outshone by his Springbok teammate and former Munster partmner RG Snyman.

Tadhg Beirne – 8

Huge display from the Munster skipper who led well when they were under the kosh after such a terrible start. Never gave up and fought the battle to the end.

Jack O’Donoghue – 7

Stole a good lineout from Snyman on the half hour when they were struggling to stay in the game and displayed a big workload throughout

John Hodnett – 6

Quiet display from the Cork man who also had a spell off the field on a night when Leinster got an edge in too many positions.

Gavin Coombes – 6

Would have hoped to have had a bigger impact but was involved in several key moments against a superior back row.

Replacements

Didn’t have the same depth on the bench as Leinster but good to see Tom Ahern return to action.
