Pittsburgh Steelers WR says Russell Wilson will be making ‘his first start’ at QB on Sunday

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was silent on who will start at quarterback on Sunday, saying on Friday the decision will be kept “in-house.”

Apparently, George Pickens didn’t the memo. The wide receiver seemingly spilled the beans by revealing Russell Wilson will start instead of Justin Fields when the Steelers face the New York Jets on Sunday.

“Yeah, [we’ve been] getting on the same page after practice, throwing more than usual because this is his first start,” Pickens told reporters Friday after he was asked if he was spending extra time working with Wilson this week.

Wilson, 35, has been a full participant in practice for the past two weeks after being hobbled by a lingering calf strain. Tomlin had said that Wilson was QB1 after the team acquired him on a one-year contract in March. But the calf injury forced him to miss the Steelers’ first four games before he was on the active roster for the Steelers’ 32-13 Week 6 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Fields, who guided the Steelers a 4-2 record and into a tie for first place in the AFC North, didn’t seem too surprised Tomlin is considering a change at the position.

“I don’t think I played good enough, if I’m being real with you,” Fields told reporters earlier this week. “If I’m being real with myself, I think if I did play well enough, I don’t think there would be any sort of who should be playing (or) who should not.”

The offense has been very inconsistent with Fields at quarterback despite the 4-2 record. The Steelers are 26th in total offense, 28th in passing and 20th in points per game.
