Even though it was in two losses, it was a big week for the Portland Winterhawks’ backup goalie, with a good performance as a starter, and then almost stealing a game in relief. With 50 saves on 53 shots, a .943 save percentage, the Winterhawks Player of the Week for October 14 through October 20 is Marek Schlenker.
Thursday vs. Kamloops: did not play in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Blazers.
Saturday vs. Everett: 27 saves on 29 shots in a 3-0 loss to the Silvertips.
Sunday at Tri-City: In a 37:40 relief appearance, 23 saves on 24 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Americans.
He might have been the third goaltender starting the season, but he’s won the number two job. This week will, at the very least, get him some more playing time, if it doesn’t propel him into the number one role.
