Gun confiscated from 12-year-old student at Bend middle school

Gun confiscated from 12-year-old student at Bend middle school

Police took a 12-year-old into custody on Monday after the seventh-grade student brought a loaded handgun to their school in Bend, officials said.

The student, who has not been publicly identified, allegedly self-reported to a school staff member at Pilot Butte Middle School that they had a gun, prompting a school-resource police officer to book the student into the Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Facility, officials said.

Officials said they believe the student was acting alone and that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

“Why the student brought a gun to school and whether the student intended to use it is all part of our active investigation,” Bend Police Department spokesperson Sheila Miller told The Oregonian/OregonLive in an email.

Officials have not announced whether the student or anyone else will face any charges.
