As I lay on the floor of the showers in our dressing room in the Hogan Stand, willing the cold tiles to ease the discomfort in my back, one overwhelming thought rushed through my mind: this isn’t worth it any more. I can’t keep enduring this, being reduced to such a helpless, demoralised state.

Outside, on the pitch, the 2023 All-Ireland semi- final had started between Kilkenny and Clare, and I was staring at the ceiling.
