Every Song & When They Play

WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for His Three Daughters.

The new Netflix drama His Three Daughters only features a few songs throughout. His Three Daughters was released on Netflix on September 20, 2024 following a two-week theatrical run in select theaters. The film originally premiered over a year ago at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2023. His Three Daughters debuted with a near-perfect 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, becoming one of just a handful of movies to join the prestigious Rotten Tomatoes 99% club, which has generated some early Oscars buzz.

His Three Daughters takes place in a New York City apartment where a man named Vincent is suffering from cancer. His three adult children, all daughters, are somewhat estranged but are forced to face each other and live together in the apartment while also grasping the impending death of their dad. The emotional and moving film features a thoughtful original score by Rodrigo Amarante, who previously composed the music for 7 Days in Entebbe (2018) and contributed to the Narcos: Mexico soundtrack with “Toyu (Narcos Theme) [Extended Version]” in 2021. Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne lead the small yet outstanding cast of His Three Daughters.

Every Song & When They Play

“Scarlett Begonias” by Grateful Dead (performed by Elizabeth Olsen): Christina sings this classic Grateful Dead song to Vincent around the 44-minute mark in His Three Daughters. While the original soundtrack version from Grateful Dead’s 1974 album From the Mars Hotel or one of their many recorded live performances does not appear in the film, Olsen’s character sings the lyrics a cappella to Vincent. This happens moments after Katie kicks Benjy out of their apartment and moments before Katie, Rachel, and Christina get into an explosive confrontation.

“Five Little Ducks” performed by Elizabeth Olsen: “Five Little Ducks” is a traditional children’s song that has been interpreted throughout the years in various languages. Elizabeth Olsen sings the song at the end of the film after Vincent dies. The sisters, shocked and devastated, all come together and sit on the living room couch, as depicted above, as Olsen sings. The song continues as Katie and Christina leave the New York apartment, which Rachel humorously chiming in with her own improvised lyrics at the end.

“In Time” by Rodrigo Amarante: The final song in His Three Daughters plays over the end credits and is the only studio recording featured in the film. Composer Rodrigo Amarante wrote and performed “In Time” over the film’s closing credits featuring a scenic city view from Vincent’s apartment.
