Mary Kenny: In great drama the stakes have to be high and there must be danger – no wonder we’re glued to the US election

Why are we so riveted by the American presiden­tial election? Yes, American leadership is a matter of great consequence for the world, and this election is deemed particularly significant.

But there’s another factor, in my view. It’s the drama. The theatre. The personalities. Even the extremes. The whole campaign is bursting with hostilities, invective, divisiveness – and people don’t hold back with their insults. Take just two distinguished American female commentators and what they’ve been saying.
