A Tarzana mid-century home by the modernist architect A. Quincy Jones is on the market for $2.995 million.

Marketed as the Calvin House, the 1960 dwelling spans 2,202 square feet with four bedrooms and three bathrooms across a single level. Floor-to-ceiling windows seamlessly connect the primary living areas with the outdoors.

The house is on over a third-acre in the Royal Homes neighborhood, with terraced lots providing unobstructed views.

According to USModernist.org , the Calvin House, initially named for developer Harlan Lee, was one of a handful of homes designed for the subdivision by Jones and his then-partner Frederick Emmons. A 1961 Good Housekeeping magazine featured it as “A House With the Outdoors Built In.”

Behind sky-blue double doors lies a secluded garden courtyard.

Listing agent Preston Gazowsky of The Beverly Hills Estates singles out the courtyard as one of the most striking and unique features of the home “because you can go anywhere in the house,” he said. “At the time, it was a new way of living.”

The home’s original lines and mid-century features have been well-preserved as it changed ownership over the years. Its current owner took it a step further by restoring the house to “what it should be,” Gazowsky said. “It was not as authentic as it is now.”

Inside the house are high ceilings, new terrazzo floors, custom millwork and glass walls.

A built-in bookshelf anchors the family room.

The house fronts a terrace with a large swimming pool and jetliner San Fernando Valley and mountain views.

Gazowsky did not reveal the name of the seller. Still, public records show a property management LLC managed by the artist Thierry Guetta and his photographer wife, Debora Medici-Guetta, bought the house in June 2021 for $1.465 million.

Guetta, an internationally-known pop artist who goes by Mr. Brainwash, is listed as the chief executive officer of the LLC.

Homes.com shows the house previously rented for $10,500 and $12,000 monthly before it hits the market on Oct. 25. Redfin puts the estimated value of the home at $19,000 above the asking price, based on recent sales in the area.

The seller’s furniture and art used to stage the property are not included in the sale price but can be negotiated separately, Gazowsky said.

Jones was an architect and educator who designed more than 5,000 structures and incorporated tract housing into natural settings. He worked with developer Joseph Eichler, collaborated with fellow architect Paul R. Williams, and served as a planning partner for William Pereira in developing Irvine.

At the time of his death in August 1979 at age 66, Jones was dean of the School of Architecture and Fine Arts at USC, where he had taught since 1951.
