League of Ireland title finale – Shelbourne or Shamrock Rovers to be crowned Premier Division champions tonight

League of Ireland title finale – Shelbourne or Shamrock Rovers to be crowned Premier Division champions tonight

It all boils down to this.

260 days since the first ball was kicked, we’ve arrived at Round 36 of the Premier Division and – following one of the most compelling title races in years – the league trophy’s destination has still yet to be decided.

With two points separating them and their nearest rivals, Shelbourne are at the Ryan McBride Brandywell and know a win over Derry City will see them become league winners for the first time since 2006.

Back in fourth, the Candystripes are out of the running and will have one eye on their FAI Cup final meeting with Drogheda United on November 10.

If Shels drop points and Shamrock Rovers beat Waterford at home, then Rovers will clinch the most unlikely of what would be a record-breaking five-in-a-row.

However, in the event of the Hoops failing to win, Damien Duff’s men will be crowned champions.

The league’s in-form side, St Patrick’s Athletic, are looking for a ninth consecutive victory away at Sligo Rovers but even that would leave them just shy of top spot.

RTÉ will be live from the Brandywell and Tallaght and Independent.ie is once again here to provide you with updates as events unfold throughout the night.
