‘I have got decisions to make’ – More departures likely after King

Ian Holloway said that he would be looking to move players on who are not in his plans at Swindon Town to clear space in the squad.

Swindon have a deeper squad this season, with multiple senior players left out of the matchday 18 when everyone is fit and Holloway said after the departure of Jeff King this week that he may not be the only player to move on.

He said: “We are over budget and my job is to look at who we have got and see if we are going to use them, or if they get another choice like Jeff did then would that suit them better?

“It is not about just moving players, it is whether I need them here because everybody wants to play and if you are not playing then there is no point in you being here.

“I am trying to assess our young lads and where they are, what they could do for us and try and clear a pathway if I feel that any of them could be moving in or if I feel that I need somebody from outside who might do what I need quicker than what I have got.

“I am coming in and I am the one who is looked at to make these decisions with fresh eyes on a group of people who are currently not in a good position in the league.

“That is what we have got to do, I have got to be brutally quick; I have got some decisions to make but that depends upon who else wants them as you don’t want to tell somebody they have got no hope and keep them on your books

King was the first departure under Holloway as he joined National League leaders York City and he said that the move just worked for all parties.

He said: “They offered him longer than we did and I was brutally honest with him about who is in front of him at the moment, let him make the decisions, and I think he has made the right decision.

“I am very sorry to lose him but I am very pleased for him and I hope he goes on and not proves us wrong but sometimes the timing of things is right and I think this was meant to be for him. I wish him all the best and they have a good player on their hands.”
