Ageing and succession: ‘Us older farmers need to wake up and hand over to the younger people before it’s too late’

This Waterford father and son have started a succession partnership, working together for the future of their farm. They explain how the relationship will play out as the holding is gradually transferred over nine years, and urge other families to put similar arrangements in place rather than wait until ‘you’re not alright to make the decision’

At 62, Eamon McCarthy is preparing to pass on his farm to his son. Over the next nine years, 80pc of his family farm in Youghal, Co Waterford will be run by Donnchadh (30).

Over the years, the 130ac farm has had milking cows, drystock and tillage. When Eamon took over from his father in 1995, he moved it altogether to sucklers. Today they have a herd of around 50 that Donnchadh is keen to grow.
