In the wake of a presidential election that saw calls to its crisis hotline increase by nearly 700%, The Trevor Project is taking a moment to celebrate some good news, courtesy of pop star Dua Lipa.
On Tuesday (Nov. 19), the LGBTQ+ advocacy group announced the “Houdini” singer as the recipient of its annual mental health champion of the year award. Citing Lipa as a “fierce, longtime advocate” for the both the LGBTQ+ community and those struggling with mental health issues, the organization thanked the singer for her work promoting their services.
“I am unbelievably moved and honored to receive this year’s Mental Health Champion of the Year Award. The Trevor Project is an organization that is near and dear to my heart, and I am humbled to play a part in shining a light on mental health awareness for LGBTQ+ young people,” Lipa said of her award in a statement. “The LGBTQ+ community have been my biggest champions since the start of my career, and I will continue to fight to make sure your voices are heard, your rights are protected, and you are treated with respect for being just the way you are.”
Lipa becomes the fourth celebrity to receive the Trevor Project’s award, preceded by past winners Lil Nas X (2021), Janelle Monáe (2022) and Dylan Mulvaney (2023). In a statement, the Trevor Project’s CEO Jaymes Black added that the “Training Season” singer “sets an excellent example for how allies can use their platforms to amplify the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community.”
In its recently published 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People, the Trevor Project found that 46% of transgender and nonbinary youth and 39% of queer youth seriously contemplated suicide over the last year. To help raise funds for the organization’s services, Lipa will also be hosting a digital fundraiser across her socials. Those looking to donate to her fundraiser can visit the Trevor Project’s website.
