Drink bans in Gaelic games have proven to be counter-productive
Last year, a research paper found evidence of a culture of binge drinking among GAA inter-county teams, based on an analysis of responses to an extensive player survey.
“One potential area of intervention is banning alcohol sponsorship of GAA competitions, teams and events,” the paper, published in the Irish Journal of Medical Science, concluded. “Alcohol sponsorship is associated with an increased risk of hazardous drinking.”
