All Frozen Flame Locations in God of War: Ragnarök

When considering which pieces of equipment to prioritize upgrading in God of War: Ragnarök, one of the first choices should always be the Leviathan Axe. Kratos’s signature weapon can be enhanced with Frozen Flames, a type of Weapon Upgrade that improves your axe’s stats. Out of Kratos’ three primary weapons, the Leviathan Axe can be one of the most reliable to improve due to its ability to inflict Frost.

God of War: Ragnarök features a total of eight Frozen Flames that you can acquire during your journey. Five out of eight of these Frozen Flames can be obtained during the main storyline, making them impossible to miss during one’s playthrough. Therefore, the true question regarding this Weapon Upgrade is how players can find the remaining three flames to improve one of Kratos’ best weapons.

Walkthrough

Defeat Crimson the Dread

The Vanaheim Crater

Complete the “Scent of Survival” quest in Vanaheim, then change the time to day within the realm. This will let you access the Crater, where you must defeat Crimson the Dread, a massive dragon boss prowling the area.

Clear A Berserker Gravestone

The Barrens of Alfheim

Head west into The Barrens in Alfheim to find a Berserker Gravestone. Interacting with this stone starts a boss fight against the Sisters of Illska and Svipdagr the Cold. Defeating each enemy here will reward you with the Frozen Flame.

Clear All Hel Tears

Everywhere

Hel Tears are all over God of War: Ragnarök‘s expansive story. Interacting with a Tear unleashes waves of enemies you have to defeat to earn rewards. Two are encountered naturally in the main story, while four others are found elsewhere. Clear Tears to gain Frozen Sparks, which combine into a Frozen Flame.

For reference, here is a list of each Hel Tear location in God of War: Ragnarök:

  • Hel Tear 1: Sindri’s house (main story)
  • Hel Tear 2: Helheim (main story)
  • Hel Tear 3: The Southern Wilds in Vanaheim
  • Hel Tear 4: Aurvangar Wetlands in Svartalfheim
  • Hel Tear 5: The Strond in Alfheim
  • Hel Tear 6: The Well of Urd in Midgard

How To Defeat Crimson The Dread

Watch Out For Fire Breath

God of War Ragnarok Kratos about to face Crimson the Dread dragon boss

While Hel Tears will only provide small challenges of endurance to fight through enemy waves, bosses like Crimson the Dread are much trickier to take down for a Frozen Flame. This dragon is not as large as the one from the previous God of War, but it is still a formidable opponent. With plenty of health and damaging attacks, you have to time your parries and dodges well to avoid taking hits.

Like any boss or enemy in the game,
watch Crimson The Dread to see if a blue or red reticle appears above it
. This will tell you whether you need to perform a parry or dodge to counter the boss’ attacks.

The most dangerous strikes you need to worry about are Crimson the Dread’s flame breath attack and lunging charge. The flame breath has a large AoE and usually is activated when you remain too close to the creature. The charge is a liner, but unblockable, attack that you have to roll away from in advance.

The best way to take down Crimson the Dread is to use the Draupnir Spear in God of War: Ragnarök or Leviathan Axe ranged attacks to bring it down while it flies. This will cause the creature to become staggered and vulnerable, allowing you to unleash Runic Attacks for massive damage. Stay aggressive and pay attention to this beast’s strikes to eventually take it down and earn your Frozen Flame.

How To Defeat The Sisters Of Illska & Svipdagr The Cold

Focus On Smaller Bosses First

God of War Ragnarok Sisters of Illska and Svipdagr the Cold Berserker Stone bosses

Similar to Crimson the Dread, The Sisters of Illska and Svipdagr the Cold are fierce bosses who guard a Frozen Flame reward. The Sisters are smaller enemies who use projectile attacks to disrupt Kratos’ offense throughout the fight. In contrast, Svipdagr is a brutal warrior with multiple strong melee attacks that constantly pressure you inside a small arena made of ice.

The best strategy for this fight is to take out the Sisters first to thin the number of enemies against you. Each Sister has a much smaller health bar than Svipdagr, so use your Runic attacks to tear through their life quickly. Once each has been beaten, you’ll be able to fully focus on Svipdagr, who is only slightly more dangerous than an Elite enemy from a Hel Tear rift when alone.

Don’t forget to use
Spartan Rage
when you reach low health to perform a series of fast melee strikes that recover Kratos’ HP on every successful hit.

Pick up healing items from the arena to stay alive for as long as possible. Those who endure and overcome every boss here will clear this location of enemies, allowing them to collect one of the optional Frozen Flames in God of War: Ragnarök.
