Locals’ guide to a US east coast road trip on Highway 95

Stephen Scourfield, Travel Editor

Every now and then, a strong suggestion comes in from locals that I just can’t pass up. And when Deia White contacted me with this, as the public relations co-ordinator for tourism operators on the east coast of America . . . well, there seemed so much local insight in the suggestions, that I’ve decided to share it here, largely in their own words.

A Highway 95 Road Trip – Best Stops Along the Way

Fly to New York City and begin a “Highway 95 adventure”. Stop at some of the east coast’s most iconic spots, as well as a few off the beaten track. We’ve found the best places to stop along the way . . .

Stop 1. New York City, New York

We start in New York City, where bagels are bigger than your head and totally worth the price. Experience iconic locations like Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and Times Square. Allow around three to five days to take in the sights and scenes NYC has to offer. It’s the perfect way to start the trip.

Experience Get a taste of Broadway with an exciting production like Oh, Mary! Or escape to Roosevelt Island and take in the city from a different view. Or try some real NYC skate culture at Xanadu Roller Arts, in Brooklyn.

Stop 2. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

There are scores of well-known Philadelphia locations, scenes and moments, from the iconic Liberty Bell to the Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. But there are also areas of the city that are unexpected and off the beaten track. Visit a Japanese teahouse in the middle of Fairmount Park, the largest landscaped urban park, or the Gothic temple in the heart of downtown. The Fabric Workshop and Museum is the only museum of its kind in the world. The gallery doesn’t hit the auction circuit or borrow from private collectors to bolster its display, instead offering makers the opportunity to create onsite.

Experience With Philadelphia previously being named Best City for Street Art, just wandering the streets to see some of the 4000 murals, sculptures and installations is one of the many things to get up to in this vibrant city. The fun doesn’t end there, with a range of delicious dining, rooftop bars, theatres, museums and outdoor adventures. You’ll be spoilt for choice during your time in Philadelphia.

Stop 3. Washington, DC.

This stop is filled with the chance to visit diverse neighbourhoods like Brookland (also known as Little Rome), Penn Quarter and Chinatown. They are filled with lively art zones and charming bungalows. It’s a place that also draws foodies, culture vultures, shoppers and sports fans alike.

Experience Go undercover at the International Spy Museum, where you can crack codes, take on covers and even lead a covert operation. Or stop by the National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum to see portraits of some of the country’s most famous historical figures. Or if you’re an animal lover, head to Smithsonian’s National Zoo. It has free entry year round.

Stop 4. Richmond, Virginia

There’s plenty of cool architecture, more than 100 art murals and stunning farmlands with berry picking, wineries, tomato festivals, giraffe-feeding and antiquing. This brings a quieter city vibe to our road trip. The Richmond Region is the city of Richmond, the city of Colonial Heights, the town of Ashland and four counties — Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico and New Kent. Each area has its own personality, but no matter where you stay, you’re not far from any of them, making it ideal to explore.

Experience Why not try something different, with the Richmond Mimosa Trail. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious brunch experience, live entertainment, rooftop views, or even mini golf with your bubbly beverage, you’ll find just the right spot to brighten your day along the trail, with a mimosa in hand at each stop. (Sober options available also, of course.)

Stop 5. Nashville, North Carolina

Nashville is a small, yet lively town in Nash County, North Carolina that is worth the stop for its ideal outdoor activities and unwinding post the bigger city stops. It’s known for its quaint Victorian and Queen Anne-style homes, and small-town atmosphere. It is perfect for a quieter few days enjoying a totally different location.

Experience A hidden gem for golf enthusiasts is Nashville’s Benvenue Country Club that’s known for some challenging courses, tree-lined fairways, scenic views, and impeccable conditions. If you’re a lover of local breweries, the nearby Koi Pond Brewing Company in Rocky Mount offers high-quality craft beer using local ingredients.

Stop 6. Fayetteville, North Carolina

This is a perfect pitstop along bustling Highway 95 for a breather to explore the local hidden gems. Fayetteville is a city with a rich historical and cultural tapestry, named after French nobleman Marquis de Lafayette. He fought with the American colonists against the British in the American Revolution.

Experience Cape Fear Botanical Garden is worth exploring for its incredible natural beauty spread over 32ha around Cape Fear River and Cross Creek. Stroll through peaceful spots and immerse yourself in any local cultural events that are ongoing during your visit. For an exhilarating outdoor adventure, visit ZipQuest — Waterfall and TreeTop Adventure, which is a thrillseeker’s paradise featuring eight zip-lines, three suspension bridges and more over a grand waterfall.

Stop 7. Charleston, South Carolina

You’ll find non-stop jazz, musical roots and city-to-beach culture. With a range of activities from watersports to historic tours, nightlife to plantations, Charleston offers something for everyone.

Experience Looking to enjoy some time on the water? Why not try paddleboarding, kayaking and boating on the many waterways that surround the city. Fishing charters are also available for those who want to try their luck at catching some local seafood. There are three beaches, each with a unique vibe. Rather relax and unwind? Stroll through the city’s beautiful parks and gardens, such as Waterfront Park and the Charleston City Market. After adventure? Head to Charleston Adventure Forest and get the adrenaline pumping.

Stop 8. Dallas

It’s easiest to fly home from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, so we’ve added Dallas as the last stop (as many travellers will probably do that). It takes well under three hours to do the local flight between Charleston and Dallas.

Dallas is home to the Dallas Cowboys, Reunion Tower, and many global companies. But the city is also rich in its own art, culture, and cuisine.

Experience Discover the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens with its 26ha display garden featuring breathtaking floral displays all year long. Head to a local sports bar like The Rustic, Stans Blue Note, or The Nodding Donkey to cheer on the Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, or Wings. Visit the The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which chronicles the assassination and legacy of John F. Kennedy.
