FC Lorient goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo has insisted he rejected Manchester United’s approach to sign him during Erik ten Hag’s tenure as he wanted to go to a club that could win titles.

During Ten Hag’s stint at United, the Reds won the League and FA Cups. However, battling for the Premier League was a much harder task which would eventually cost the Dutchman his job.

Another tough challenge was revamping United’s goalkeeper department. It became clear quickly that David de Gea did not fit the vision for Ten Hag and there was a severe lack of back-up options to provide cover too.

Eventually, Altay Bayindir would be signed to play as back-up to Andre Onana but before the Turkish shot stopper joined, Mvogo was approached. The Swiss had spent a couple of years on loan at PSV Eindhoven when he was offered the chance to join United in the summer of 2022.

However the 30-year-old, who now plies his trade in the French second tier, has explained why that option was never on the cards. “Manchester United for example [wanted me],” he told Blick.

“But that wasn’t an option for me. I’m not happy if I can’t be on the pitch.

“I want to enjoy my time on the pitch right now, together with fans and teammates. I want to play for titles and ideally win them too.”

During his career, the goalkeeper has won the Dutch Cup and Dutch Super Cup with PSV and counts Young Boys and RB Leipzig as previous clubs. Lorient currently sit a point behind Paris FC in the French second tier.
