Some people feel there has been plenty of mediocre play across the NFL this season, but a number of quarterbacks have put forth some excellent football, at least so far.

One of those quarterbacks who has done well is Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, who has thrown for 3,028 yards and 27 touchdowns and leads the league in both categories, as well as in QBR.

But the Bengals are just 4-7, and their chances of making the playoffs are slim.

That contradiction has ESPN host Mike Greenberg saying that the team is wasting his outstanding play.

“They are mishandling one of the great seasons that we’ve ever seen a QB have,” Greenberg said, via ESPN Radio.

Burrow has been considered one of the league’s truly elite signal-callers for the past few years, and there was hope that after he was riddled with injuries last season, Cincinnati would return to being a contender this season.

Instead, the Bengals lost their first three games and suffered a heartbreaking loss in Week 11 against the surprising Los Angeles Chargers despite coming back from a 21-point deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

The defense has been the main culprit. The Bengals rank in the bottom third of the league in many defensive metrics and have allowed at least 34 points in five games this year.

The big question is what will happen with star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who is leading the league in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns but has just one more year left on his contract after this season.
