‘A sad day for Fermoy’ – pensioner (90s) dies and woman (60s) seriously injured after being hit by car in supermarket car park

A pensioner has died after being hit by a car in a supermarket car park in Fermoy, Co Cork this morning.

The man, aged in his 90s, was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been named locally as Cal O’Keeffe, a retired teacher and former principal of Glanworth National School.

The second individual, a woman aged in her 60s, has been taken to Cork University Hospital to be treated for injuries believed to be serious.

The incident occurred at approximately 11.15am when both individuals were struck by a car.

The driver of the car, a man aged in his 90s, received medical attention at the scene.

The scene has been preserved for technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators.

Local Fianna Fáil councillor Frank O’Flynn said his thoughts are with the families involved in “a tragic, very sad” incident. He described Mr O’Keeffe, who was a neighbour of his, as “a lovely person”.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families at this very sad time. It’s an awful tragedy to happen,” he said.

Fermoy-based Fine Gael councillor Noel McCarthy said the incident caused “a terrible shock in the town of Fermoy”.

“We’re all devastated, and we’re thinking of the man that passed away and his family at this sad time. Our deepest sympathies to them. And of course, we’re thinking of the lady that was injured and hopefully she’ll make a good recovery. We’re all praying for her.

“It was a sad day for Fermoy. A sad day.”

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Any pedestrians who were travelling in the environs of Courthouse Road, Fermoy Town, between 10.45am and 11.30am on Friday, October 18 are asked to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in this area at these times are also asked to come forward.
