Comedian and actor Aisling Bea has spoken about why she kept her pregnancy a secret and revealed the baby’s gender.
In August, the Co Kildare native announced the arrival of her first child with her boyfriend, producer and composer Jack Freeman.
She didn’t make her pregnancy public until June when she made an appearance at the Big Slick Kansas City fundraiser in the US.
Speaking to Christine Lampard on ITV chat show Lorraine, Bea said it was nice to keep her pregnancy private when so much of her personal life is in the public eye.
“I was trying to keep it a secret, and I got away with it for a while too, if it wasn’t for those pesky kids,” she said.
“I think especially when a lot of your life, or you talk about a lot of your life in public, it’s like keeping something a little bit precious for yourself that’s private, and getting your head around it as well.”
Bea said she’s doing well after giving birth last month and joked her baby won a worldwide competition voted on by just her and Freeman.
“There was a big competition worldwide and it turns out my baby is actually best in the world. It was actually only voted by myself and my boyfriend but we’re really delighted with the award,” she said.
“She’s the best that there’s ever been, and a genius as well. You can really tell, just the way her legs move, we might have a genius on her hands. Not that I’m biased anything.”
Having kept the gender of her newborn under wraps, Bea revealed she is a mother to a baby girl. She also told the show she has been getting parenting help from other well-known names in comedy.
“I think if you’re going through anything and you have people who are in a similar environment and they’re trying to do anything, like parenting in the same environment,” she said.
“So, my child has basically been dressed by Katherine Ryan and Sarah Pascoe’s second-hand baby clothes.”
