Army bomb disposal unit deployed to Limerick estate after ‘suspect device’ found under vehicle

The army’s bomb disposal unit was called to a Limerick housing estate after a “suspect device” was found under a vehicle.

The Defence Forces were called in to assist An Garda Síochána in relation to a suspected explosive device found in Pike Avenue, Garryowen.

“Gardaí responded to reports of criminal damage to a parked car in the Garryowen area of Limerick shortly after 1.30am this morning,” a garda spokesperson said

While attending to the incident, a suspect device was discovered under the vehicle, they added.

A cordon was established and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit attended at the scene.

The device was deemed non-viable and the cordon was subsequently lifted.

An arson attack was carried out in the same estate last week, whereby a man jumped from an upstairs window as a house was set alight in a suspected petrol bomb attack.

The man who jumped from the upstairs window during the attack sustained injuries to his back, as well as cuts and grazes.

He was later transferred to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) for non life-threatening injuries.

However, it is not known if the suspected device was linked to last week’s arson attack.

“No additional information is available at this time.

“Investigations are ongoing,” a garda spokesperson said.
