Body found in grounds of University Hospital Limerick believed to be that of missing man

Gardaí suspect the body of man found on the grounds of University Hospital Limerick (UHL) is that of a male missing from the mid-west region.

It is understood that while the body had yet to be formally identified, gardaí were working on the understanding that the remains were that of a man who had been reported missing several weeks ago.

The body was discovered late Thursday night near to a helipad and a staff car park on the grounds of the hospital, located at St Nessan’s Road.

A Garda spokesman said that gardaí were “investigating all the circumstances” surrounding the discovery of the man’s body.

“The body has since been removed from the scene and a post-mortem examination will take place at a later date, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation,” they added.

Gardaí said their investigations are ongoing and that the office of the Limerick Coroner had bee contacted in respect of an inquest hearing being organised.

A large area where the body was discovered, including a car park and adjoining green areas, remained sealed off Friday with gardaí maintaining a presence at the scene.

It is understood a member of the UHL staff discovered the man’s remains and alerted the emergency services.
