The highly-anticipated feature film, produced by Netflix in association with BBC Film, is a continuation of the award-winning series set in the lawless streets of Birmingham in the 1900s.
Cork-born Murphy is returning as the iconic Tommy Shelby, the role he played over six seasons between 2013 and 2022.
The Oppenheimer Oscar winner will be joined by fellow Irish actor and Academy Award nominee, Barry Keoghan, who will also star in the film.
It has been confirmed that Rebecca Ferguson of Dune and Mission Impossible and Tim Roth of Reservoir Dogs and The Hateful Eight will join the cast, with further actors yet to be announced.
The Peaky Blinders film, as yet untitled, has been written by the show’s creator Steven Knight, who will co-produce the movie alongside Caryn Mandabach, Cillian Murphy and Guy Heeley.
Although the plot and further casting remain tightly under wraps, the show’s creator Steven Knight has revealed it’s set during the Second World War.
“I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders,” he said.
Tom Harper, who directed episodes in the first season in 2013, will return to helm the film as one of the executive producers.
He said there is a “great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew”.
“We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary,” he added.

Cillian Murphy has previously said the Peaky Blinders film is “one for the fans”.
“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders,” he said.
