Day One May Have Introduced The Most Important Alien Yet

A Quiet Place: Day One is a fascinating entry in the iconic horror franchise, offering some more insight into the terrifying aliens and detailing their arrival on Earth – but one detail in the film seems to suggest even more about the creatures than is explicitly stated. The film follows two new characters, Eric and Sammy, as they journey through New York on the day of an alien invasion. A Quiet Place: Day One was a box office hit that doesn’t immediately beg for a sequel, but offers enough subtle hints that could make it work.

Audiences were first introduced to the mysterious Death Angels in A Quiet Place, which takes place several years after the invasion that’s depicted in Day One. However, due to the characters’ lack of knowledge in those horror spectacles, very little was known about the creatures until the prequel. A Quiet Place: Day One is a different movie than promised, with less intense horror and more grounded, human storytelling. But there are still plenty of details about how the aliens work; one detail even suggests that there’s another kind of alien out there, perhaps waiting for the right moment to strike.

A Quiet Place: Day One’s Egg Scene Might Include The Queen Alien

The Queen Makes A Very Brief Appearance

Day One May Have Introduced The Most Important Alien Yet

During one of the film’s most intense and spine-chilling sequences, Joseph Quinn’s character Eric finds himself surrounded by aliens when he takes a dangerous detour to save Sammy’s pet cat. While he’s hiding from the creatures, Eric watches them crack open an egg-like entity and feed from it – offering a glimpse into their ecosystem that audiences had never seen before. It’s a terrifying scene because it proves that the aliens have some kind of intelligence – they’re not just hunting for survival, because they’re not (exclusively) eating the humans. There’s something else behind their actions.

By including this particular sequence, director Michael Sarnoski seems to be hinting at the existence of a “queen” who could appear in future

sequels.

Most creatures with this kind of food ecosystem – where prey is retrieved and brought back to some sort of hive – often operate with different ranks in their species. Bees, for example, have workers and queens; the worker bees constitute the majority of the hive, and they’re the ones responsible for ensuring the survival of the species. The queens, however, are responsible for laying eggs and keeping the workers in line. By including this particular sequence, director Michael Sarnoski seems to be hinting at the existence of a “queen” who could appear in any future A Quiet Place sequels.

A Quiet Place: Day One’s Alien Inspiration Makes The Queen’s Introduction More Likely

The Queen Could Appear Properly In The Next Movie

Sarnoski has even confirmed that he took inspiration from leafcutter ants when developing the ecosystem of the Death Angels. In an interview with Digital Spy, the director explained that “there’s an ecosystem of these creatures”, and that they’re “kind of leafcutter ants that are farming, using the organic material of people to grow what is their food source.” The food source in question is the eggs that Eric discovers in the warehouse, which aren’t baby aliens as one might expect, but rather the nutritional result of dead, harvested humans.

By subtly explaining this process in Day One, Sarnoski makes the whole franchise seem even more sinister. The victims of the Death Angels aren’t just eaten, but harvested for their nutritional value and transformed into extraterrestrial eggs for the hive to feed from. This kind of information makes the Death Angels seem much more complicated, adding a new level of disgust and fear to the film – while retroactively making John Krasinski’s death in A Quiet Place even darker than it already was.

What A Queen Alien Would Mean For A Quiet Place’s Future After Day One

The Leader Could Pose A Much Bigger Threat

The existence of a Queen almost certainly sets up another encounter with the aliens in a future sequel, raising the stakes even higher and allowing the writers to get even more creative with the sci-fi concepts. Day One proves just how difficult it can be to defeat the regular Death Angels, with Sammy having to sacrifice herself for Eric at the end of the film; bringing the Queen into battle would make things even more dangerous.

Ultimately, the introduction of the Queen is a perfect way for A Quiet Place to secure its survival as a long-running franchise. The reveal is subtle enough to be backtracked if another idea comes along, but interesting enough to use in the future and to keep audiences invested in these aliens until then. Whether it’s another main-saga A Quiet Place movie or another prequel/spinoff, there will definitely be room for the Queen to make herself known and prove the full strength of the Death Angels.
