DC Elevates an Iconic Villain to the Same Threat-Level as Darkseid

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Absolute Power: Task Force VII #7!As fearsome as Darkseid is, an unexpected threat is out to seize control of the entire DC multiverse. There may be countless cosmic villains who endanger the multiple earths, but the true danger to the Prime Earth and beyond is a far more human threat.

After stealing the powers from nearly every superhuman on Earth, Waller has brought hero community to it’s knees. With powerful assets like Failsafe and Task Force VII, the Suicide Squad’s leader effortlessly cemented herself as a force to be reckoned with. But Amanda Waller has bigger plans that could see her become one of the most dangerous threats to DC’s limitless multiverse.

Amanda Waller is Building an Army to Take the Multiverse

Absolute Power is Just Phase One of Her Plans

DC Elevates an Iconic Villain to the Same Threat-Level as Darkseid

In Absolute Power: Task Force VII #7 by Dan Watters, Fran Galán, and Dave Sharpe, the heroes of the world are rallied by Red Star, who alerts as many international teams as possible, warning them that Amanda Waller is going after heroes everywhere. Unfortunately, the Eurocorps team of heroes are already under attack in Berlin by Global Guardian, an Amazo who has stolen Martian Manhunter’s powers among others. Nightrunner, the Batman of France, tries to fight back, but finds himself woefully outmatched by Amanda Waller’s soldier.

Nightrunner made his first appearance back in
Detective Comics Annual #12 (2011)
.

Global Guardian tears its way through the international heroes, stealing powers from metahumans like Jet. Thankfully, Thunderlord takes off one of Global Guardian’s arms, giving the heroes a chance to escape. The last remaining heroes rendezvous with Red Star in space on the Intercorps satellite to discuss a plan. Unfortunately, Global Guardian returns with a vengeance, destroying the space station and depowering every hero he can. From her base on Earth, Amanda Waller observes the chaos, noting that Global Guardian is the last of Task Force VII to finish his assigned targets.

…Waller has built a gate to the multiverse and is building an army.

In Waller’s metahuman prison on Gamorra, Wonder Woman and Robin continue to lead the superhero prisoners in a jailbreak. However, Diana’s ally Steve Trevor is lagging behind, and is pinned down by several Task Force agents who open fire on Steve. Steve uses a communicator to talk to Diana and reveals that Waller has built a gate to the multiverse and is building an army. From an unknown location, Waller confirms that Steve is correct and that she’s planning to bring the entire multiverse under her control.

Amanda Waller Has Become More Ambitious Than Ever

From The Suicide Squad to Task Force VII

More often than not, Amanda Waller has been on the wrong side of history, operating from the shadows and doing what she must to protect her nation’s interests. Waller’s greatest achievement was the Suicide Squad, a clandestine team composed of imprisoned supervillains who agreed to take on dangerous work in exchange for time being taken off of their sentences. Waller was a firm leader and always did what she needed to get the job done, whether that meant extortion, coercion or even outright murder.

…Waller launched a full-scale attack on the heroes of the world that resulted in most of them being incarcerated on Gamorra.

However, after years of black ops work, Waller set her sights on bigger things, namely the terrifying and morally corrupt Earth-3, home of the Justice League’s sinister counterparts, the Crime Syndicate. Waller traveled to Earth-3 with the intention of liberating the world from the Syndicate, only to end up taking control of the team. But while on this backwards world, Waller felt a higher calling to protect her home in a radical new way: By depowering every metahuman on Earth.

Don’t forget to check out “The War for Earth-3” storyline to see Waller’s first mission across the multiverse!

After making it back to the Prime Universe, Waller spent months assembling the assets needed to see her mission through. With heavy hitters like the Brainiac Queen and Failsafe (plus an entire squad of Amazos), Waller launched a full-scale attack on the heroes of the world that resulted in most of them being incarcerated on Gamorra. Even as heroes began to mount a defense, Waller worked in secret on the next phase of her plan, involving a giant gate to the multiverse and the Crime Syndicate of Earth-3.

Waller’s New Ambitions Make Her a Serious Threat Going Forward

She’s Now a Multiversal Problem

Though her shadowy work with supervillains generally never involved big confrontations with superheroes, Waller began to viewing them as problematic given the influence they held over the public. It was no surprise that she started using the Suicide Squad to start dealing with heroes she felt needed to be taken care of, making her a real thorn in the side of big-name heroes. Even Absolute Power, as shocking as it was to see, somewhat makes sense given how much Waller desires control.

…Waller lacks in Omega Beams, she makes up for in ruthless determination…

But going for total control of the multiverse is a huge departure for Waller and one that should have the heroes quite concerned. Waller may just be a human, but she’s tough and knows how to psychologically manipulate even the most powerful aliens and demons. She with just time and effort, she was able to capture nearly the entire superhero community and seize their powers for herself. It’s not that hard to believe that Waller could seriously be one of the biggest threats the DC Universe has ever seen.

Granted, a genuine threat like Darkseid makes Amanda Waller look like an ant. But for what Waller lacks in Omega Beams, she makes up for in ruthless determination and grit. If she wants something, she doesn’t stop until she damn well gets it. If Waller has serious ambitions to take control of the multiverse, she’s not going to simply go back to just running covert operations for the government. Waller’s going to stick to her guns and do whatever she must until she’s brought her brand of justice to every other world in the DC multiverse.

And What About the Rest of the Multiverse?

Assuming Waller survives Absolute Power, the heroes are going to have to watch Waller like a hawk. She’s very good at disappearing, but the heroes cannot afford to lose track of her, less they risk her making another play for the multiverse. Hopefully the only place Waller will be going in a post-Absolute Power world is a jail cell, but if she winds up in the wind, the Justice League is going to have to do everything they can to track her down. If they aren’t careful, then DC’s heroes are going to have a lot more to worry about than just Darkseid.
