Donegal woman ‘lucky and grateful’ to be alive after horse jumped onto car in terrifying incident

Martina Murray from Letterkenny was on route to Castlefinn on Wednesday morning when a black horse jumped onto her car, shattering the windscreen and causing significant damage to the front of the car.

The incident occurred in the Carnowen area of Castlefinn.

Martina said the black horse ‘came out of nowhere’ and hit her car.

“It attempted to jump the car but it’s hoof hit my side of the windscreen leaving it shattered on top of me.

“It then retreated and hit all the left of my car.

“To say I was shocked was an understatement.

“I am very lucky and grateful to be alive.

“I’m an animal lover and my greatest fear was that the horse was killed but thankfully it wasn’t,” said Martina.

Martina luckily escaped without any major injuries but has a number of scratches and bruises.

The car was extensively damaged.

Following the ordeal, Martina said ‘three angels’ appeared to help her.

“A girl called Karen came on me while I was on my knees in the middle of the road in hysterics.

“She must have got an awful shock herself. She thought there was someone dead when she seen me and the state of my car.

“She proceeded to stay and comfort me, used her phone to ring people and drove me to the health centre to get checked out. She waited and drove me home to Letterkenny.

“A man called Eugene came and started directing traffic as my car was in the middle of the road. He went and got a brush and started sweeping debris to ensure it was safe for other drivers.

“A man in a blue BMW also stopped and lifted debris and glass with his bare hands.

“Those three people went out of their way to help a stranger, they will never know how thankful I am to them,” said Martina.

Martina was driving to Lifford when the incident occurred.

Martina is now appealing for help finding the owner of the horse. She is worried the horse was injured as a result of the collision.

“I am asking for assistance in locating the owner of that black horse. It is bound to be cut or bruised or injured.

“No one has rang to enquire if I am okay so I’m surmising no owner has come forward.

“Also if any vets have had a black horse in for examination or treatment can they please contact me,” said Martina.

“Anyone know any owners of horses in the Carnowen area of Castlefin, could they contact me.

“Any information at all will help me,” concluded Martina.
