Every Member Of Dominic Toretto’s Family In The Fast Franchise

Dominic Toretto plays a huge role in the Fast and Furious franchise, with his family serving as the central group around which the entire narrative revolves. In the Fast movies what started as a simple story about car enthusiasts stealing DVDs has quickly evolved into an international tale of espionage and global terrorism – but Dominic Toretto and his family remain at the heart of it all. Despite the huge changes to the style of the series, Toretto’s focus on family hasn’t changed, maintaining that crucial theme of family in every Fast movie.

Particularly in the more recent Fast and Furious sequels, Dominic Toretto’s family has become even more important. Audiences have been given deeper glimpses into Dom’s history, new faces have emerged from the past, and Toretto’s fight has become much more personal. It’s part of what makes Fast and Furious such an interesting and lovable franchise – despite all the bold stunts and gripping set pieces, it’s still a story about togetherness. Toretto’s obsession with family has become a meme over the years, but there’s a surprising charm to it that keeps Fast and Furious burning even when the stories grow repetitive.

10 Letty Ortiz

Every Member Of Dominic Toretto’s Family In The Fast Franchise

Letty Ortiz is among the few Fast and Furious characters who’ve been there since the very beginning, appearing in the first movie as Dom’s love interest. Letty’s character was crucial to giving Toretto a heart and grounding him despite all of the off-the-wall racing and thieving. However, when Toretto disappeared from 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift, it was uncertain whether or not Letty would have a future in the franchise. It wasn’t until the fourth movie that her true purpose became clear.

In Fast & Furious, it’s Letty’s supposed death that brings Dom and Brian back together for the first time since the original movie. This is a dark moment in Dom’s life, but it allows him to bond with Brian and put aside their differences – the pair finally become friends as a result of Letty’s death in Fast & Furious. However, once Letty was revealed to be alive in Fast & Furious 6, her role in the franchise became totally different. Her complicated past with Toretto gave the story a whole new dimension, and it’s hard to imagine that the series could’ve survived without it.

Letty is undeniably one of
Fast and Furious
’ most interesting figures.

By the events of Fast X, Letty and Dom have fully reconciled, and she’s been reintegrated back into his team. Letty is undeniably one of Fast and Furious’ most interesting figures, and despite a few injustices that she’s faced along the way, the Fast saga wouldn’t be the same without her. Although she’s a great character in her own right, Letty also serves to make Dom a more interesting character, with their relationship grounding him in reality when his actions often seem over the top.

9 Little Brian

Dominic Toretto’s Son

little Brian Dominic Toretto Fast X

Little Brian is Dom Toretto’s only son, though the circumstances of his birth (like everything in the Fast and Furious series) were far from conventional. Brian is the child of Dom and Elena Neves, the FBI agent who was first introduced in Fast Five alongside Agent Hobbs. With Letty presumed dead, Dom quickly struck up a relationship with Neves despite their occupational differences, and Little Brian is the result. However, when Cypher stepped into Dom’s life in The Fate of the Furious, the situation got even more complicated.

After Cypher killed Elena, Dom’s stake in this narrative became even more personal. Instead of fighting for the thrill of driving and getting revenge for Letty, Toretto was fighting to protect his son. This really helped develop Toretto as a character, instantly getting the audience on his side and giving him something tangible to protect. Elena’s death was a dark moment in Dom Toretto’s backstory, but Little Brian helped push the franchise forward as a result.

8 Jakob Toretto

Dominic Toretto’s Brother

John Cena as Jakob Toretto in Fast X driving

Although Jakob Toretto wasn’t introduced until later in the Fast franchise, his presence in F9 and Fast X was still one of the highlights. Jakob is Dom’s long-lost brother, an international terrorist who helped Cypher escape from captivity and wreaks havoc on Dom and his gang. And thanks to the franchise’s clear focus on family, Jakob quickly became one of Fast and Furious’ best villains. His dynamic with Dom was the best part of F9, with their shared childhood offering some more insight into the protagonist’s past and making him even more relatable.

Jakob decides to join his brother’s gang and joins the fight against Dante Reyes in
Fast X
, teaming up with the good guys and beginning his messy road to redemption.

By the end of F9, Dom manages to reconcile with Jakob, and in true Fast and Furious fashion, family wins in the end. Jakob decides to join his brother’s gang and joins the fight against Dante Reyes in Fast X, teaming up with the good guys and beginning his messy road to redemption. John Cena’s stone-cold performance makes Jakob such an exciting and gripping character to watch, bringing a new dimension to the franchise after a long period of forgettable villains.

7 Mia Toretto

Dominic Toretto’s Sister

Mia on a date with Brian in The Fast and the Furious

Mia Toretto is another character that’s been around since the beginning of the Fast franchise, serving as Brian O’Conner’s love interest in the first movie and quickly becoming an integral part of the series. In the early days of Fast and Furious, Mia served as the barrier between Dom’s criminal world of racing and Brian’s morally gray world of upholding the law. Her romance with Brian is the driving force of those first few movies, with both characters struggling to maintain their romance in the turbulent world of driving and fighting crime.

Following Brian’s retirement in Furious 7, Mia’s role in the franchise became somewhat reduced – but she remains the bridge between Dom and Brian. While O’Conner hasn’t appeared since Paul Walker’s untimely passing during the filming of Furious 7, there have been several hints that he’s still around in this narrative – and Mia is clearly still in contact with him. If Fast and Furious decides to bring Brian O’Conner back, Mia Toretto will surely play a huge role in the story and finally receive her happy ending.

6 Brian O’Conner

Dominic Toretto’s Brother-In-Law

For a while, Brian O’Conner was shaping up to be the protagonist of the Fast and Furious franchise. Not only did he play a huge role in the first movie, but he also led its direct sequel 2 Fast 2 Furious when Vin Diesel was uncertain about returning. Brian’s presence was integral in those early films, establishing the central theme of family that’s become such a crux of the Fast saga’s marketing. Brian’s friendship with Dom was the most interesting part of the first movie, as they hail from different sides of the tracks, but they manage to bond over racing.

Unfortunately, actor Paul Walker lost his life in a car accident before filming completed on Furious 7, and Brian was consequently written out of the franchise. Toretto took over as the sole protagonist, but O’Conner’s memory remained a huge part of the story. Even in the later sequels following Walker’s death, the character plays a huge spiritual role in motivating Dom to fight for those he loves.

5 Jack O’Conner

Dominic Toretto’s Nephew

Dom and Brian with their children in Fast Five

Jack O’Conner is the son of Brian O’Conner and Mia Toretto, and while he doesn’t play a huge role in Fast movies, his existence is crucial for the development of his parents’ love story. Mia’s pregnancy in Fast Five is a hugely important step in their romance, cementing their love for each other in the face of constant action and danger.

Once Jack is born in Fast & Furious 6, it gives Mia and Brian something to love beyond Dom’s world of cars. Their family drama in the Fast movies is much-needed after several installments of action-packed storytelling, and Jack O’Conner helps ground his parents and steer them towards a more normal lifestyle.

4 Jack Toretto

Dominic Toretto’s Father

Dom's father in Fast X

Jack Toretto doesn’t come into the story until F9, and when he does, it’s only in the form of flashbacks. The ninth Fast movie reveals that Jack was involved in an accident during a high-stakes race that ultimately killed him.

Without this trauma in [Dom’s] past, the tension between these brothers simply doesn’t work and
F9
falls apart as a result.

Jack Toretto is one of the few deaths that Fast and Furious can’t retcon, because it’s so integral to Dom’s character and his relationship with Jakob. Without this trauma in his past, the tension between these brothers simply doesn’t work and F9 falls apart as a result.

3 Abuelita Toretto

Dominic Toretto’s Grandmother

Rita Moreno as Abuelita Toretto in Fast X

Another member of Dom Toretto’s family that isn’t introduced until later in the franchise, Abuelita Toretto appears briefly at a family barbeque in Fast X and praises Dom for the family that he’s created. The pair seem to have a very strong relationship, despite never appearing on-screen together before this.

Later in Fast X, Abuelita is targeted by Dante Reyes as part of his revenge plot against Dom. The villain sets out to bring down his nemesis’ entire family as vengeance for their murder of his father, Hernan Reyes, the primary antagonist of Fast Five. Luckily, Abuelita seems to be safe from Dante’s grasp for now.

2 Tony Toretto

Dominic Toretto’s Cousin

Tony Toretto Fast and Furious Spy Racers

Tony Toretto doesn’t appear in any of the Fast and Furious movies, but he’s still crucial to the overall narrative of this universe. As Dom’s cousin, he’s the main focus of Fast and Furious: Spy Racers, the animated spin-off show on Netflix. The series follows his adventures as he’s recruited by a government agency to infiltrate and take down a domineering crime organization.

Not only is Tony Toretto one of the best Spy Racers characters, but he’s also the most likely to cross over to live action if the franchise ever decides to bring the two projects together. He’s Dom’s cousin, and while their relationship isn’t as close as the rest of his relatives, the character is notorious for recruiting his family members when times get tough.

1 Fernando Toretto

Dominic Toretto’s Cousin

Havana Cuba in Fast And Furious 6

Fernando Toretto appears briefly at the beginning of The Fate of the Furious, when Dom and Letty travel to Havana to celebrate their honeymoon. He asks his cousin for help after his car is stolen, and Dom willfully comes to the rescue by challenging the culprit to a race.

While Fernando is only a minor character, his life in Havana is something that Fast and Furious could potentially explore further in a future movie. It’s possible that Dom has even more family in the Caribbean, and this could serve as a useful stepping stone for taking the crew there again one day.
