A fire broke out last night at Weston Airport in Dublin, with all flights in and out of the facility cancelled on Wednesday.

Authorities said the small blaze that broke out in a room near the control tower of the small private airport was quickly brought under control last night.

In a statement, the airport said: “Weston can confirm there was a small outbreak of fire in a room close to the Control Tower at 22:00 Tuesday night 24th September. The fire was brought under control by the Fire Service and there were no injuries.

“A full investigation into the cause of the fire will start in the morning. The Airport is closed Wednesday with all flights cancelled.”

Weston bills itself as “Ireland’s only executive airport” offering services for helicopters, and private planes and jets.

The airport was established by Darby Kennedy in 1931, and is home to several flying clubs.

The National Flight Centre pilot academy has operated at Dublin Weston Airport since 1977.
