A FOOD delivery driver suffered serious injuries to his legs after being chased and rammed by a group of men in a stolen car.

Gardaí are investigating the incident which occurred in the Mahon-Beaumont area of Cork around midnight on Thursday.

It is believed that the attack represents a road rage incident – and that there was no racial motivation behind the assault.

Health Service Executive (HSE) paramedics and several units of the Cork City Fire Brigade attended at the scene in Beaumont after receiving reports that the gang had chased and rammed the 23 year old Brazilian food delivery driver who was travelling on a motorcycle.

The man was apparently pursued by the gang from Mahon to Beaumont in the southside of the city.

They rammed the delivery driver at Woodvale Road in Beaumont before fleeing the scene.

Householders who heard the impact of the ramming emerged from their properties and raised the alarm.

They found the man lying trapped and badly injured under his crushed bike.

He had sustained a serious compound fracture to one of his legs.

The man was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) for emergency treatment.

He was conscious but in a considerable amount of pain.

The damaged bike was removed from the scene and will be forensically examined.

The area where the ramming occurred will also be technically examined

It is believed the man informed gardai that he had an interaction with those travelling in the stolen car in the Mahon area.

They then pursued him to Beaumont where the road rage ramming took place.

A Skoda Kodiaq was stolen from a property in the Courtbrack area of Blarney, Co Cork ten days ago and it is believed to have been the vehicle involved in the incident.

An alert was put out in connection with the gang who subsequently rammed a Garda car at 2am on Friday on the Old Mallow Road on Cork’s northside.

Two gardai received minor injuries in the incident.

It is understood the thieves subsequently headed in the direction of north Cork.

CCTV security camera footage is now expected to play a crucial role in the investigation.

Gardai have asked that anyone who witnessed suspicious behaviour in the areas of Mahon, Beaumont and Old Mallow Road in Cork overnight to call Anglesea St Garda Station on (021) 4522000.
