Garda sustains stab wounds in Cavan while giving medical assistance to man

Gardaí have launched an investigation after a male officer was allegedly stabbed when responding to an incident in county Cavan yesterday.

A garda was stabbed while attempting to come to the aid of a man in Cavan yesterday afternoon.

The incident took place in the north-east of the county when gardaí were called to an incident at around midday. When officers arrived at the scene, a male officer attempted to provide medical assistance to the man, who is aged in his 50s.

During those attempts, the garda is believed to have sustained a number of wounds to his arm and thigh. The Irish Independent has also learned the officer’s stab vest was also slashed on more than one occasion.

The garda was treated at the scene for his injuries, but did not require hospitalisation and remained on duty in the wake of the incident.

Gardaí detained the man under the State’s mental health legislation before he was later released without charge. It’s now anticipated that a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to determine the next course of the investigation.

“Gardaí were called to an incident in Co Cavan at around midday on Tuesday, October 15,” said a garda spokesperson.

“While trying to provide assistance to a member of the public, a garda received injuries. He was treated at the scene and remained on duty.

“A man (aged in his 50s) was detained under the Mental Health Act and was subsequently released without charge. A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.”
