Gardaí release man as suspect still questioned after man (50s) found dead in apartment in Ballina, Co Mayo

One of two men who were arrested in relation to the death of a man in a property in Ballina, Co Mayo, has been released.

Gardaí arrested two men have been arrested after the man in his 50s was found dead at an apartment.

Gardaí were alerted to an incident at a residential property on Tone Street shortly after 11.45pm on Wednesday.

“A male in his late 50s was found inside an apartment on the premises with serious injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” a Garda spokesperson said.

“Two individuals, both males in their late 20s and early 30s, have been arrested in connection with the incident. They currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.”

In an update on Thursday evening, the force said one of the men has now been released.

“The man, aged in his 20s has been released without charge from the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions,” a spokesperson said.

“The second man arrested, aged in his 30s remains in Garda custody detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.”

The local coroner was notified and the Garda Technical Bureau and State Pathologist called in.

“A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Ballina Garda Station,” a spokesperson added.

“A Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has also been appointed to support the deceased’s family.

“The scene has been preserved for a forensic and technical examination and a post-mortem examination has been arranged.”

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly anyone with camera footage, including dashcam recordings from road users in the Tone Street area and nearby locations around the time of the incident.
