Ghosts Season 4’s New Character Sets Up An Unexpected Redemption Arc

Although Ghosts season 4 will have a hard time pulling this off, the hit sitcom is seemingly setting up an overdue redemption arc for one supporting star. The ghosts of CBS’s Ghosts are largely likable, but they all have their flaws. Hetty is comically haughty and aloof, Sass isn’t above causing some drama for entertainment, and Trevor has an undeniable sleazy side. Ghosts season 4 may seem the Woodstone B&B’s undead residents grow and change, but the ghosts are mostly lovable despite their flaws. However, at least one of them is overdue for some growth.

Like its British inspiration of the same name, Ghosts has a big cast of specters to keep up with. As such, the series doesn’t have time to flesh out every character’s story in every episode. Ghosts season 4 is seemingly ignoring Hetty’s unknown powers and backstory, and this is pretty understandable considering how many other plots the show is focusing on in this outing. However, it is high time that one Ghosts supporting star got a redemption arc since they have been at the center of many of the sitcom’s conflicts in its first three outings.

Patience’s Arrival Forces Isaac To Change In Ghosts Season 4

The Sarcastic Character Flattered His Captor In A Ghosts Season 4 Clip

Brandon Scott Jones’s Isaac is overdue a more redemptive storyline in Ghosts season 4 and, fortunately, the sitcom seems ready to provide the character with this necessary arc. Isaac has good qualities, as he is loyal to the Woodstone B&B’s living and dead inhabitants, and he is quick to apologize when he is at fault. However, he is also bitter, catty, and self-involved, and this has a real deleterious impact on his fellow ghosts. His fear of commitment cut his love story with Nigel short, while his thoughtless mistreatment of Patience the Puritan came back to bite him.

In the season 3 finale’s ending, Isaac is kidnapped by Patience. Ghosts season 4’s scary new character can be seen holding him hostage in TVLine‘s exclusive promotional teaser for the outing, celebrating their potential eternity together. As surprising as it might sound, Isaac seems like he might genuinely like Patience in the clip. He compliments her appearance and does all he can to ingratiate himself with Mary Holland’s new ghost, avoiding the sarcastic commentary he often provides even in moments of peril.

Isaac’s Ghosts Season 4 Redemption Would Be Perfectly Timed

Isaac Has Been One Of Woodstone’s More Consistently Toxic Spirits

If this plot is handled well, Isaac could grow and change as a character in Ghosts season 4 by earning Patience’s forgiveness and redeeming himself in the ghost’s eyes. It is admittedly more likely that Isaac is simply charming Patience out of fear, but this would be a less interesting path for the conflicted character. As he has proven throughout Ghosts seasons 1-3, Isaac is defined by contradictions. He insistently attempts to romance Hetty to disprove any questioning about his sexual orientation, but then struggles with monogamy when he finally admits his attraction to Nigel.

Isaac’s belief that he deserves to be recognized alongside the founding fathers might be comically delusional, but it has held him back from growing and changing.

Isaac could benefit from taking an honest look at his life and afterlife and this could make him a less mean-spirited presence in the house. While Sass’s Ghosts season 4 backstory is likely to be more moving than Isaac’s origins, the Revolutionary War general’s death was tragic, if also somewhat comic. Isaac’s belief that he deserves to be recognized alongside the founding fathers might be comically delusional, but it has held him back from growing and changing for hundreds of years. Gaining the humility required to apologize to Patience could be key to his eventual redemption.

Isaac’s Ghosts Season 4 Redemption May Be A Fake-out

Ghosts’ Showrunners Teased Patience’s “Scary” Powers

It would be understandable, if disappointing, if Isaac is trying to stay on Patience’s good side and secretly hates his captor. Ghosts season 4 needs conflict and, since Patience did kidnap Isaac, she will no doubt be the show’s main villain for some time. However, as Jay gains the ability to see ghosts, Sass’s backstory is revealed, and Patience becomes part of the show’s main cast, Ghosts season 4 could also afford to improve Isaac’s outlook on life (or rather the afterlife) and his legacy.

Ghosts
season 4 premieres on October 17, 2024, on CBS.

Isaac could start his journey toward redemption by sincerely making amends to Patience and helping the creepy Puritan ingratiate herself with the rest of the house’s residents. This wouldn’t be easy, but it would make up for leaving her trapped in a hole for years. Isaac’s flaws aren’t too numerous or deep-seated to fix, but the show has lately ignored them despite how much screen time the character receives. It might be easier to keep the sitcom protagonist flawed, so the show always has another steady source of drama and conflict, but Ghosts season 4 should prove Isaac can grow.
