How To Make Water-Powered Electricity In Satisfactory

The factories you build in Satisfactory will need electricity to remain active, but it can be hard to make water-powered machines capable of generating the energy you want. While the game does not offer non-renewable energy systems, burning water is still an important step towards creating electricity. You have to create the right structures to start building power for your other systems.

The most efficient factories in Satisfactory are made through organization. You have to realize exactly what you need and the right number of resources required for getting a job done before you start doing it. This way, you can set up supply lines and keep materials separated that you know will have to be used to create your water-powered electricity structures.

Invest In Coal To Start Generating Power

How To Make Water-Powered Electricity In Satisfactory

The only machine in Satisfactory that uses water to create electric power is the Coal Generator, a building you need to make once you unlock Coal Power at Milestone Tier 3. This goal is one of the primary progression methods in the game, allowing you to gain new recipes for structures. This Generator is necessary to help create other devices that will help you advance into even higher Milestone Tiers later.

Before you can set up anything close to a power grid in Satisfactory, you need to build at least one Coal Generator using these materials:

  • 20 Reinforced Iron Plate
  • 10 Rotor
  • 30 Cable

You will also need to construct Water Extractors to get the Coal Generator to start working. Coal Generators consume a variety of fuels to start producing electric power, but this structure always needs water to start functioning. To build a Water Extractor, you’ll have to collect 20 Copper Sheets, 10 Reinforced Iron Plates, and another 10 Rotors to start funneling and processing water.

Much like Coal Generators, a Water Extractor can only be made once you have reached the Tier 3 Milestone of technology in

.

Once you have both a Coal Generator and a Water Extractor, you may have to build some connecting pipelines to connect the two structures. For example, your Water Extractor may need to be placed in a spot far away from where the Generator needs to be. As a general rule, it’s better to have your Generator and Extractor closer together if you can help it, as it’s easier to transport electric power than water.

Place Your Structures And Feed Them The Right Fuel

You can only start gaining water when you place the Water Extractor over deep water somewhere on your map in your dedicated Satisfactory server. When placing your Extractor, a warning will come up if you try to place it somewhere the water isn’t deep enough. The rule listed in the game states that you must have at least 9m of visual clearance below the surface of a body of water for an Extractor to work.

Some areas are disallowed from an Extractor working when you place it beyond the boundaries of a body of water. Some examples include the west of the Oil Islands coast and the southeast areas of the Swamp region.

The Coal Generator consumes Coal, Compacted Coal, or Petroleum Coke as basic fuel to start generating power. When your Generator starts to burn fuel, it also needs to burn water to stay cool enough to make power. Typically, a piece of Coal is burned in the Generator every four seconds, giving it a fuel rate of about 15 Coal per minute that you need to keep supplied for continuous electricity.

Each material has a unique Energy output when burned in the Generator, along with specific burn times that could influence which one you collect more. The number of Water Extractors you’ll need to regulate your Generator depends on which materials you choose to burn more often. Similar to computers in Satisfactory, there are a lot of moving parts you have to follow, starting with this basic information:

Fuel Type

Energy (MJ)

Burn Time

Coal

300

4 seconds

Compacted Coal

630

8.4 seconds

Petroleum Coke

180

2.4 seconds

As you can see, it is best to use Compacted Coal to fuel your Generator due to its higher Energy output and slower Burn Time. Once you have the right Pipelines and Extractors needed to keep your Generator operating, you can start making water-powered electricity in Satisfactory consistently.
