It was a story that landed big and far beyond the political bubble: Gráinne Seoige, one of the biggest stars on Irish television for more than 20 years, was being lined up by Fianna Fáil to run as a Dáil candidate in Galway West.
Hours before the selection convention last month, it was confirmed by the party that three of the nominees vying for two spots on the ticket had pulled out, leaving just Seoige and city councillor John Connolly standing. She has been campaigning hard on the doorsteps ever since.
