A two-person ‘syndicate’ from Limerick has collected a life-changing €5.5 million jackpot prize after hiding their winning ticket in a rather unusual place.
The pair, who had been playing the same numbers for years, were finally rewarded with a prize of €5,501,086 after purchasing the ticket at Mace in Kildimo.
Reflecting on the night of their win, one syndicate member recalled watching the draw on television. “I was watching the draw live on TV, and when the numbers appeared on the screen, I had to pause it straight away.”
Reliving the moment, she added: “Fair City was on after the draw, but I don’t remember anything from that episode! Even when we went to bed that night, neither of us could sleep – it was such a shock to the system.”
The winning ticket had been safely hidden in the garden. “We had an empty jar left over from one of our dinners, so we cleaned it out, put the ticket inside, and buried it. It’s been there for weeks!” said one of the winners.
“I was outside digging it up last night to bring it up to Dublin today,” he laughed.
While they have no immediate plans for their newfound fortune, the Limerick duo shared that they hope to travel the world and take life a little easier.
In addition to the Limerick syndicate, a family syndicate from County Laois is also celebrating after winning €250,000 in the Lotto Plus 2 draw on September 28.
The winning ticket was purchased at SuperValu in Rathdowney. “I was scrolling through my phone and saw that a winning ticket was sold in Laois, so I checked my ticket online,” said one family member. “When I saw the ‘big win’ notification, I knew it was real. It was very surreal.”
