Ireland weather: Met Éireann extends rain warning to seven counties this weekend after sunny weather today

Cork and Kerry may see very heavy and persistent rain on Saturday with the most adverse weather in the mountainous areas as both counties have been updated to a Status Orange rain until 11pm.

The national forecaster warned of river and coastal flooding and advised motorists of dangerous travelling conditions and possible travel disruption.

The Status Yellow warning for counties Mayo, Clare, Limerick, Waterford and Galway will be in place for the entirety of Saturday, kicking in at midnight and lasting until midnight on Sunday.

Heavy and persistent rain in impacted areas will possibly bring localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions.

The worst of the rain will clear on Saturday night with showers becoming confined to the north and east of the country, and drier weather moving in from the southwest.

Those showers will clear from the north and east on Sunday morning, giving way to a mixed day of sunny spells and scattered showers. Rain will be heaviest in the west and south with highs of 15 to 18 degrees.

Looking ahead to early next week, there will be some sunny spells but scattered showers will turn heavy at times with a chance of thunderstorms. Met Éireann’s outlook beyond Monday is that unsettled weather will continue in the following days.

Meanwhile, the west and southwest will be mostly cloudy and rain will turn more frequent there this evening. Highest temperatures today will be between 13 and 16 degrees.

It will be mostly cloudy overnight with some outbreaks of rain and drizzle, staying driest in the east and southeast with lows of 8 to 13 degrees.

There is a chance of some sunny spells tomorrow, but it will be mostly cloudy and damp with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. The best chance of sunshine will be in the afternoon in the west and southwest, with highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees.

Widespread rain tomorrow night will turn heavy in some places, bringing the possibility of some localised flooding. It will be mild with lowest temperatures staying between 11 and 15 degrees.
