Joker 2 sets unwanted record as it lands disappointing opening

Joker: Folie à Deux has set a disappointing record, becoming the first comic book movie to earn a D CinemaScore from audiences.

The anticipated sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 hit arrived in cinemas on October 4, but, unlike its predecessor, it hasn’t seemed to impress either critics or audiences.

The film has received the lowest grade ever for a comic book movie on CinemaScore, overtaking 2015’s Fantastic Four, which received a C-.

Folie à Deux has also landed a disappointing box office opening, earning just $20 million on Friday (October 4), including $7 million in previews.

Heading into the weekend, the film was expected to make $50 million to $60 million. This falls significantly behind 2019’s Joker, which earned $96.2 million in its debut.

The critical response to Folie à Deux has been largely negative, earning it a dismal score of 33% on Rotten Tomatoes from 257 reviews at the time of writing.

“Joaquin Phoenix’s eponymous Joker takes the stand in a sequel that dances around while the story remains still, although Lady Gaga’s wildcard energy gives Folie á Deux some verve,” reads the site’s critical consensus.

Digital Spy gave the film two stars, writing in our own review: “Ultimately, not even Lady Gaga’s star power and Joaquin Phoenix’s physical commitment can save a movie determined to doom itself.”

It seems this will be the last we see of Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn, as Todd Phillips has ruled out the possibility of doing either a third film or a solo Harley Quinn film.

“It’s not really where this movie is headed for me,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.”

Joker: Folie à Deux is out now in cinemas. Joker is available to buy on Blu-ray or streaming now.
