League of Ireland: Derry City edge ahead on massive night as title race heats up

League of Ireland: Derry City edge ahead on massive night as title race heats up

Seán O’Connor is in place as the reigning champions visit the home of Drogheda United

Welcome to Weavers Park as Drogheda United host Shamrock Rovers in what could prove to be a huge clash at both ends of the table. A home win here this evening would cut the gap on eighth-placed Bohs to just a single point (for the time being) as the Dublin side go to Sligo Rovers on Saturday evening. But the Hoops arrive in Louth knowing that anything less than three points would prove a massive blow in their five-in-a-row hopes.

Drogheda’s home form has been good this season, just three league defeats in 16 home games so far this term – but Stephen Bradley’s men arrive here in good form with four wins and a draw in their last six, as they look to cut two point gap on leaders Shelbourne.

Just the one change for the hosts, as the injured Conor Kane makes way for Shane Farrell, while for Rovers, Marc McNulty and Lee Grace replace the injured Sean Hoare and Johnny Kenny – with the latter arriving back from international duty with the Ireland U-21s after Tuesday’s Euro 2025 qualifying exit in Italy.

One big talking point too is the fact that Richie Towell has been left out of the Rovers squad tonight. He made headlines when he appeared to storm down the tunnel in the second half of their league win over Shels earlier this month, after it was clear he wasn’t going to come off the bench.
