Canada Post was forced to suspend mail delivery to people in a Guelph neighbourhood in July because of dogs on the loose in the area, the corporation said.

Lisa Liu, a Canada Post spokesperson, said the service’s delivery agent was “at risk due to multiple loose dogs” on Algoma Drive.

According to Liu, after “several incidents” involving the animals, there was a serious cause of concern for the delivery agent.

“Door-to-door delivery was temporarily suspended to customers residing on Algoma Drive,” Luia said, adding that customers were directed to pick up their mail and parcels at Canada Post’s Guelph depot, located at 250 Woodlawn Road West.

Liu said affected customers were notified on July 25 about the temporary conversion of their mail delivery to a community mailbox.

The community mailbox has been installed across from 58 Montana Road — approximately 350m from the furthest impacted address — the Liu said.

Customers are advised that items that need a signature and parcels that do not fit in the community mailbox will be carded for pick up at the closest Canada Post location.

Canada post is reminding customers with dogs of the following:

  • Be careful when you answer the door, so your dog does not slip out.

  • Keep your dog inside, in a fenced yard or tied up far from the front door or mailbox.

  • Keep front doors and fence gates closed.

  • Keep your dog away from the screen door, even if it is locked.
