Alongside the attempted murder charge, Nevin was charged with violent disorder and the possession of both a pick axe handle and a hatchet.

Detective Garda Adrian O’Reilly gave evidence of having arrested the accused at his home address shortly before 7pm last night.

He said Nevin made no reply to any of the four charges when they were put to him at Mullingar garda station less than an hour later.

Nevin is the second man to be hit with an attempted murder charge which, upon conviction, carries a maximum term of life in prison.

Michael Nevin Jnr (39) of Grange Heights, Mullingar, has been in custody since August 7 after being denied District Court and most recently High Court bail earlier this week.

Michael Nevin Jnr (39) was refused High Court bail earlier this week after being charged earlier this month with the attempted murder of Anthony Dinnegan (30s) in Mullingar on August 2.

The accused, who was dressed in a beige jacket and tracksuit bottoms, stood emotionless with his hands clasped as details surrounding his arrest and subsequent charges relating to the August 2 incident were relayed before Judge Bernadette Owens.

There was no application for bail by defence solicitor Louis Kiernan, as hearings for such cases can only be heard in the High Court.

The victim, Anthony Dinnegan, who is in his 30s, suffered a series of life-threatening injuries, including a laceration to his liver, bowel and lungs before undergoing emergency surgery in a bid to stabilise his condition.

Gardaí believe up to 15 people took part in the attack on Dinnegan, who also suffered a gash to his leg after also being attacked with a hatchet.

The court heard how the alleged incident stemmed from a worsening feud involving two locally based families in the midlands town over an alleged €50 drug debt.

Since July 4, the court heard there had been 15 incidents of a violent nature being recorded, ranging from criminal damage, threats to kill, discharge of a firearm as well as the discovery of stolen firearm.

Judge Bernadette Owens consequently remanded Nevin in custody to appear back at a sitting of Mullingar District Court via video link next Thursday.
