Manchester City v Arsenal – Roy Keane’s view: ‘It’s like we’re making out they did something extraordinary’ – City blamed for being poor, not Arsenal being good

Manchester City v Arsenal – Roy Keane’s view: ‘It’s like we’re making out they did something extraordinary’ – City blamed for being poor, not Arsenal being good

The Sky Sports pundit thought Pep Guardiola’s men played poorly in the game despite taking the lead through Erling Haaland early on before Arsenal stormed back in the first half to go ahead through Ricardo Calafiori’s lovely strike and Gabriel’s header from a corner.

Arsenal were then reduced to 10 men when Leandro Trossard was shown a second yellow and sent off just before halftime for kicking the ball away and delaying the restart.

Keane said: “They’ve conceded two goals, they haven’t defended that well.

“Can I tell you, it has happened before where teams can get a result with 10 men. It’s like we’re making out they did something extraordinary.

“Listen, Arsenal did well, but City were really poor, no movement, no overlaps, no underlaps, so it was more poor play from Man City than Arsenal’s brilliant defending.”

His fellow pundit Micah Richards praised Arsenal’s resilience, though, and in particular the contribution of central defenders Gabriel and William Saliba in the 2-2 draw at Manchester City.

Richards said: “Man City will be disappointed in the way they played in that second half. I thought Gabriel and Saliba were unbelievable.

“To defend like that for 45 minutes in the second half against the best team in the league was just remarkable, going and getting tight, dropping off, spaces, organising, Gabriel scoring a goal.

“When Gabriel came to Arsenal, he was making a few mistakes on the ball, but he’s changed his game to be reliable every single week, whether it’s set-pieces defending, set-pieces attacking, his overall play. I just thought he was remarkable today.”

Keane, however, felt the visitors had overdone the gamesmanship and were ultimately made to pay for it.

He said: “Obviously, City will be delighted with a point. It’s through the last kick of the game. John Stones is talking about Arsenal and I suppose their tactics, really.

“Obviously, that frustrated them when they got their noses in front 2-1, a lot of time-wasting and ultimately it’s cost them.

“Arsenal can be smart with that, of course, but I think they probably overdid it today and ultimately it backfired at the end. There was seven or eight minutes gone on at the end.”

Keane also had little sympathy for Trossard over his second yellow card.

He said: “You’re on a yellow card – listen, unfortunately I had a few reds – you try not to give a referee a chance to give you another yellow.

“He’s given him the perfect opportunity to say, ‘look, you’ve barged into somebody’, and he has kicked the ball away.

“It’s not even a debate. You don’t need to watch it 30 times, he’s wrong. It’s a second yellow and it’s the height of stupidity.”
