Ireland’s new European Commissioner Michael McGrath has been handed a big EU challenge with responsibility for pushing justice co-operation and enforcing the rule of law across the 27 member states.
The Irish Commissioner designate, and former finance minister, could not land an economic portfolio, which he and the Irish Government sought, due to fierce competition from big EU member states such as France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
