Every weekend more and more teams across the college football landscape put themselves into the national championship conversation. Several are making it known that they should be in consideration for the new, expanded 12-team College Football Playoff with a chance to compete for a national title.
As a result, the betting odds for teams to take home a national championship this season are constantly shifting. With the favorites to hoist a national title trophy in January changing yet again this weekend following a stellar Week 8 of action.
FanDuel Sportsbook has officially updated their national championship odds now that Week 8 is wrapped up. Check out the latest betting favorites to win this year’s natty below.
Georgia is the betting favorite to win it all, again. The Bulldogs beat Texas in Austin handedly and the defense looked national championship-good.
Yes, the Bulldogs have one loss to Alabama but it seems like they’re the class of the SEC again. Now that they beat Texas, all roads go through Athens to win the SEC and seemingly the CFP title.
Ohio State, despite losing to Oregon, actually has better odds for the national championship than the Ducks! There could be a Big Ten title rematch, as long as Penn State doesn’t get in the way.
After a bye week, the Buckeyes will take on Nebraska before going on the road to play the Nittany Lions. If they’re 7-1 going into the final four games, expect the odds to shorten.
Texas dropped its first game of the year and just couldn’t get it figured out against the Bulldogs’ defense in the first half. Quinn Ewers improved in the second half after a brief benching for Arch Manning in the second quarter.
But, Texas has to regroup to stay near or at the top of the SEC. Still, the Longhorns have the third shortest odds to win the national championship.
There is a team tied in terms of national championship odds with Texas and it’s this Ducks squad. Oregon has a win over Ohio State and the inside track to the Big Ten Championship Game.
Why are the odds longer than the Buckeyes? Maybe it’s pure talent from Ohio State and the potential rematch in Indianapolis favors Ohio’s favorite squad. To be determined though!
Penn State is still undefeated but the Nittany Lions’ national championship hopes might hinge on what happens against Ohio State in a couple of weeks. First up, it’s Wisconsin.
But this could be the best squad coached by James Franklin during his decade plus in State College. Penn State is still on the short list to win it all.
How about Clemson climbing their way back into the national championship picture? That’s right, forget about that first game against Georgia.
The Tigers have won six in a row and ranked in the top 10 of the AP Poll. Can they keep it going? Well the ACC is open between them, Miami and a couple of other squads.
Tennessee beats Alabama and the odds go up for the Volunteers! Suddenly, people are thinking this team has a shot at the national championship.
Probably wouldn’t hurt to take a flier on Josh Heupel and company. This team only has one loss to Arkansas and could certainly get themselves deeper into the title picture.
Miami is undefeated but might be on thin ice when it comes to the national championship. The Hurricanes have had three close games in a row and there’s still the Clemson factor, which has shorter odds!
The path is there though. Mario Cristobal’s crew controls its own destiny to win the ACC, get to the playoff and potentially win it all.
Alabama is still on the upper tier of national championship odds despite its second loss of the season. The Crimson Tide could make a run and at worst, earn an at large bid to the College Football Playoff.
But it’s fair to question if it’s going to take more than a year for Kalen DeBoer to make Alabama a dominant force like what Nick Saban did most of his career. Onto the next one.
