Over 70pc drop in asylum-seeker applications from countries that were on State’s original ‘safe’ list

Over 70pc drop in asylum-seeker applications from countries that were on State’s original ‘safe’ list

The countries are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and South Africa.

People coming from countries designated as being safe and who are seeking asylum have their applications expedited.

The State currently lists 15 safe countries of origin: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, Egypt, Georgia, India, Kosovo, Malawi, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Morocco, Serbia and South Africa.

There has also been a 66pc fall in applications from Nigeria and a 67pc reduction from Jordan, two countries that had the highest number of applications in the three months to last July and also had applications expedited.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee will give her cabinet colleagues an update on the immigration situation on Wednesday.

Algeria and Botswana were added to the safe country list on January 31 of this year and there has been a 78pc reduction in applications received from those countries.

A total of 138 people have been arrested by gardaí for arriving into the country without documents this year.

There has also been an increase in the number of people leaving the country voluntarily without being deported.

So far this year, 648 people with no legal status to remain have voluntarily left the State, compared to 175 in the same period last year, a 270pc increase, according to Ms McEntee.

The Government is planning to use chartered flights for deportations and the tendering process is expected to finish this year.

Ms McEntee has also suspended visa-free travel to Ireland for refugees who are holders of a Convention Travel Document issued by another state and has added countries to the visa-required list.

Following the introduction of visa requirements for South African nationals, there was a 46pc drop in the number of international protection applications from that country.
