Paddy Armstrong: ‘I confessed because I was afraid they would kill me’

It’s been 50 years since the Guildford Four were arrested, including Paddy Armstrong. His memoirist writes about his wrongful conviction, their friendship, and Armstrong being the subject of her new play

Some of the questions Paddy Armstrong gets asked most frequently are: Why did you confess to something you didn’t do; how much money did you get; are you angry and do you hate the English?

He’s been asked a few other interesting ones too, such as what he missed most in prison. That came from a student in the secondary school where his wife Caroline taught for 37 years, until she retired last year.
